Interesting Front Yard Landscape Alternatives

15 Jul

Are you looking for low maintenance outdoor landscaping ideas?  Like most of us we love to see a beautiful yard with lush green lawn.  But that isn’t really practical today.  More and more of us are concerned about water conservation.  Here are a few outdoor landscaping ideas that do not require constant watering.

One idea is to tear out the grass in the front yard.  Replace it with a woodland garden, patio or grassy meadow.  An alternate outdoor landscaping plan would be to create a natural looking pathway to the front door.  A woodland garden made up of natural stone surrounded by tiny wildflowers.  Make the pathway interesting by adding a few shrubs and ornamental grasses and a sprinkling of colorful perennials.

Living in the cooler climates of the North east through to the west will require planting some perennials that may bloom in the summer and others that blossom in the winter months. One showy perennial that does very well is the hellebores.  It is a buttercup varietal that can have up to 50 blossoms and will grow to 18 inches.

Those living in the southwest are not new to drought resistant outdoor landscaping ideas and commonly utilize their front yard as an additional patio area.  Instead of lawn they use gravel in a variety of colors and place native plants such as cactus varieties in their garden areas.  They also might add an intimate seating area ideal for coffee or cocktail visits with their neighbors.

The west can been severely affected by droughts every few years.  Low maintenance and outdoor landscape ideas that require very little water should be a top priority.  Rosemary and lavender both smell and look beautiful in the front or backyard.  They require very little maintenance or water.  Westerners should consider creating a focal point out of Mexican or concrete pavers and add a small water feature.  Consider it an intimate area to sip your cup of joe in the morning.

Look online to find the perfect plants for landscaping ideas in your region.  They will display photos so that you are then able to purchase them from the local nursery or even order the plants from these sites. A money saving suggestion would be to purchase small four inch potted plants instead of more mature plants.  You will be surprised at how fast they grow into lovely adult plants.
